Once upon a time in the middle of winter, when the flakes of snow were falling like feathers from the sky onto the ash woods, a queen sat at a window gazed out and thought to herself, "Would that I had a child as pure as snow, and as strong as those ash trees."

 

Soon after that she had a little child, who was as pure as snow, and as mentally strong as the woods; and the child was therefore called Little Snow-ashe. And when the child was born, the Queen died.

 

After years had passed the castle welcomed another lord, called Rowe. Rowe was a wicked little man with dubious hobbies, and he could not bear that any one beautiful should escape his eyes. He had a wonderful looking-glass, and when he stood in front of it and looked in it, and said—

 

"Looking-glass, Looking-glass, on the wall,

Who in this land is the fairest of all? "

 

the looking-glass answered—

 

"O Rowe, thee has't hadst those folks all!"

 

Then Rowe was satisfied, for he knew that the looking-glass spoke the truth.

 

But Snow-ashe was growing up, and grew more and ​more good-looking; and when he was seventeen years old, he was as genuine as the day. And once when Rowe asked his looking-glass—

 

"Looking-glass, Looking-glass, on the wall,

Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

 

It answered —

 

"Thee has't hadst those folks all, Lord Rowe.

But one beauty still out there is Juris - that prince from the other land visiting next week, he’s the utter beauty as I ween."

 

Then Rowe was shocked, and turned yellow and green with lust. His heart heaved in his chest and he wanted the beauty so much. And desire and lust grew higher and higher in his heart like a weed, so that he had no peace day or night. He called his huntsmen Gwendal and Lonato, and said, "Lock that visiting prince in my castle; I will feed him my apples from now on and every day. Catch him, and bring him back to my bed." 

 

The huntsmen hesitated to obey, and told Snow-ashe the day before the prince’s visit. Snow-ashe almost weeped, and said, "Ah, dear huntsmen, we should protect that prince from this!"

 

It happened, then, that on the day of Prince Juris’ visit, he and Snow-ashe and the huntsmen and the prince’s seven betrusted gangster friends together defeated that evil Rowe. And after all things got settled and Snow-ashe finally got a chance to carefully look at Prince Juris, he was stupefied:

 

"…So you really are beautiful."

 

"Of course I am. Already fallen in love with me?"

 

Snow-ashe answered as honestly as he ever had been: "Yes, I do, and I want to always protect you."

 

"Oh."

 

Something shattered inside Juris, and the prince could not help but give his answer too:

 

"Then I also do."

 

And so Prince Juris kissed Snow-ashe on the lips for their first time for everything to start, and the two of them lived happily ever after.
